Burned To A Crisp

This is the title of an article that appeared in Golf Digest Magazine in July 2008. It talks about the risk of contracting skin cancer that is higher for golfers than for those who spend less time out in the sun. It has been over 2 years since the article appeared and although medical science has made great strides in that time, the situation in regard to golfers, cancer and skin damage remains the same.

Get a Grip on Your Sunscreen

Every "expert" golfer and coaching manual / video will have their own ideas about what is the most important aspect of playing great golf and what you need to do to improve. But one thing no one will ever ignore is the importance of your grip. If you don't grip your clubs properly, you will never be able to play to your true potential. One thing that can adversely affect your grip is using a sunscreen that is greasy or tacky. This is actually the number one reason given for not using sunscreen while out on the course.

A Driving Passion

Few sportsmen are as passionate about their sport as golfers. There is little that can keep a golfer away from their game and when play is not possible, they tend to get fidgety and restless. Obviously, when they are playing, they are completely immersed in the game, to the exclusion of almost all else. And that includes caring for their health. Most golfers know that excessive exposure to the sun not only damages their skin but that it can also lead to skin cancer, a disease that has reached epidemic proportions in America. They take what precautions they can and hope for the best because golf comes first.

Summertime Golf And Summertime Skin

Summer is when golfers really become active. Avid golfers will play under almost any conditions, at any time of year, but in many parts of the world, summer is the time when golf becomes a regular part of one's life. Bright sunlight, blue skies and lush green golf courses bring out the best in a golfer. Unfortunately, it's also the time when a golfer's skin is most affected. Strong sunlight causes drying, wrinkles, age spots, blemishes and other signs of aging. And of course, it is when the dangers of skin cancer are the highest. Obviously, these are important considerations but will not prevent golfers from playing the game they love. Many cover themselves up with long sleeved shirts, long trousers, hats and so on. Although effective, these outfits can become quite hot and uncomfortable.
